Bar Hill, a fort on the Antonine's Wall has yielded a number shoes which give a good impression of mid 2nd century AD shoe types. One of these is the calceus below. Generally the mid 2nd century sees rather low calcei with an upper with large cutouts. The heel area often has an upwards extension cut in a decorative pattern. The upper, as almost always is cut in one piece with the seam running up the center orf the vamp. The tabs for closing the shoe are strenghtened from the inside. The outer sole is attached by tunnel stich and nailed.
